National Radon Poster Contest - Utah Winners Announced

The National Safety Council (NSC), in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, sponsored the 2007 National Radon Poster Contest. The goals of the contest are to raise awareness about the harmful effects of elevated levels of indoor radon gas, and to increase the number of homes tested for radon.

Children ages 9-14 were invited to submit hand-drawn or computer-generated posters regarding radon. The winning entries would be unveiled in a ceremony in Washington, D.C., in January 2007, and combined and reproduced in a nationally-distributed poster. Each national winner, parent, and sponsoring adult (e.g., teacher) would receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. to participate in the ceremony.

The Division of Radiation Control promoted the National Radon Poster contest by mailing contest fliers to 700 elementary, junior high, middle, and high schools in Utah. State winners in the two categories were chosen by the NSC. The first place winners for Utah are:

Miss Pinnock's entry also placed third in the national contest. She, her parents, and her teacher will be in Washington, D.C. for the ceremony announcing the National Radon Poster Contest winners. The Division of Radiation Control congratulates Miss Pinnock and Miss Egan, their parents, and teacher on their winning entries and for helping to increase awareness of radon gas in the community.

On January 09, 2007, Utah Governor Jon Huntsman Jr. met with the two contest winners at the State Capitol to congratulate them on their winning entries, and to offer them the opportunity to be part of the Radon Action Month Declaration signing.
