January 09, 2007 - Utah Governor Jon Huntsman declares January as Radon Action Month. The text of the declaration is posted below.
Whereas, the Surgeon General has declared that Radon causes lung cancer; and
Whereas, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has identified Radon as a leading national health hazard; and
Whereas, Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer and the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers; and
Whereas, approximately a third of homes tested in Utah have Radon concentrations at or above the EPA's Action Level; and
Whereas, more than 21,000 persons nationwide die each year from radon-induced lung cancer; and
Whereas, reliable and inexpensive test devices are available, and homes with elevated Radon concentrations can be reduced to acceptable levels for a moderate price; and
Whereas, state officials are concerned for the health, safety, and well-being of citizens, and support reducing environmental health hazards;
Now, Therefore, I, Jon M. Huntsman, Jr., Governor of the State of Utah, do hereby declare January 2007, as
Radon Action Month
in Utah, and encourage homeowners to seek information and perform in-home Radon tests to determine concentrations in their homes and take action to reduce their exposure to Radon. Moreover, home builders are encouraged to use radon-resistant building techniques.
